Australian and New Zealand Army Corps is known by the acronym “ANZAC.” The allied expedition to take the Gallipoli peninsula on April 25, 1915, included soldiers from Australia and New Zealand.
Every year ANZAC Day is observed. There are two ways to commemorate ANZAC Day. In all parts of the country, memorial services are held at dawn, the hour of the actual landing in Gallipoli. Later in the day, ex-servicemen and women gather to participate in marches across the major cities and many smaller towns. Solemn memorial services are at war memorials all around the country.
If you are staying in house with us and you want to join the dawn service to pay your respects, there is a yearly dawn service at Burleigh Heads, Elephant Rock in Currumbin Beach and other activities in which you will be greatly welcomed;
RSL Burleigh Heads Sub Branch
The RSL Burleigh Head Sub Branch will hold an ANZAC Day Dawn Service. The dawn service is held from 4:15 am to 5:30 am at the Cenotaph Memorial Park in Burleigh Heads to pay tribute to those Australians and New Zealanders who have fought in or made the ultimate sacrifice in wars and conflicts since World War I.
The ANZAC Day event will occur at Memorial Park Burleigh Heads from 9:15 am to 11 am. Wreath-laying, playing of the Last Post, and observing a minute of silence are all part of the traditional ANZAC Day service.
Currumbin RSL
The Lighting of Throwers Bridge & Elephant Rock
Following the positive reception from the neighbourhood in previous years, Throwers Bridge in Currumbin and Elephant Rock at Currumbin Beach will again be illuminated from April 17 to 25. The lighting fixtures serve as a visual reminder. This is something very unique to the Gold Coast and something memorable to experience whilst visiting the Gold Coast on your holiday.
Walk4Remembrance
On April 23, the Walk4Remembrance returns. The opportunity to come together and support one another, raise awareness of the soldiers who have died due to an internal struggle, and remove the stigma attached to mental illness is fantastic.
The 8-kilometre walk this year has the halfway point at Currumbin creek and travels from Currumbin RSL Reserve to Tugun Surf Life Saving Club. All funds from Walk4Remembrance are for the Veteran Support Center to continue delivering high-quality help and services to veterans. All are welcome!
Dawn Service at Elephant Rock
The largest dawn service on the Gold Coast is the Currumbin RSL Dawn Service at Elephant Rock on Currumbin Beach on April 25. The march will start at 4:35 am, and the dawn service will begin at 5 am. Be there early because the organisers anticipate a sizable turnout from the community this year.
For the regions outside of the ceremonial precinct, there is no registration. There will also be a park-and-ride service from The Pines Shopping Center and Currumbin RSL heading to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can walk to Elephant Rock.
It will run from 3 am to 4:45 am while returning to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is at 7 am following the conclusion of the service. Non-veterans can use this service for a gold coin donation; the money will go toward their Veteran Support Programs.
At the club’s cenotaph, Currumbin RSL will conduct a mid-morning service. At 10:35 am, meet at Winders Park on Duringan Street. At 10:55 am, the march starts, and the cenotaph service begins.
ANZAC Day Fly-Past
There will be a fly-past during the mid-morning service on ANZAC Day. Between 11:23 and 11.30 am, an F18 Super Hornet will fly over the Currumbin RSL’s cenotaph during the mid-morning service. From west to east, the Super Hornet will approach the creek at the height of 500 to 1000 feet.
ANZAC Day Luncheon
After the mid-morning service at the Currumbin RSL Cenotaph is the annual ANZAC Day Luncheon hosted by the Currumbin Palm Beach RSL Sub Branch at Waterside Events (upstairs in Currumbin RSL). The doors will open to ticket holders at noon. Three courses of food, beer, wine, and soft drinks are all included in the admission price.
